这是根据一个真实的故事改编，知青张敏生长在大城市，被遣返回乡接受“再教育”，并与当地的农民结婚，但不久她的丈夫意外死于车祸。
按当地风俗，丧夫女人本该尽快远嫁，但是婆婆的家境以及五个弟妹的前途使她无法释然，这个有着强烈同情心、爱心的善良的女人，最终放弃了再度降临的爱情和幸福，在原定成亲的那一天，她毅然抱起自己的被褥回到了婆婆的家里，心甘情愿地当起了“嫂娘”。不久，婆婆病逝，嫂子成了五个弟妹的全部依赖。为了五个孩子能完成学业，她省吃俭用、积劳成疾，当五个弟妹都成为大学生时，她却恋恋不舍而又心满意足地告别了乡亲、弟妹……。Gloria wakes up one morning in her attic with yet another boyfriend at her side, Fuffi.
